The Basics of Car Winterization

Last updated 5 months ago

It is almost winter, and while you may not be prepared for the snow, cold, ice, and wind, your car should be.  Keep reading to learn the basics of car winterization, and then head to your local auto parts store in Chicago and stock up on supplies.

Snow Tires

If you live in an area that receives more than 24” of snow fall a year, then purchasing a set of snow tires is an excellent idea. Snow tires have special tread that makes them effective in gripping slushy, snow-covered roads. Another benefit of purchasing snow tires for the season is that you’ll know your tread is fresh and performing at its maximum potential during the times you need it most.

Snow Chains

In addition to snow tires, snow chains or tire chains are a great tool for drivers in places that experience frequent heavy snow fall. Snow chains are easy to install and give you immediate traction on snow- and ice-covered roads. They are, however, not recommended for use on asphalt roads that lack a layer of snow, so when the blizzard subsides, prepare to take them off.

Shovel

If you live in a wintry climate, stowing a shovel in your vehicle is an excellent tip. With a shovel, you can dig out a vehicle that has been blocked in by a snow bank and provide a traction platform for a wheel that is spinning in place.

Emergency Kit

You should always keep an emergency kit handy in your vehicle, but be sure to winterize it when the temperature drops. A space blanket and hand and toe warmers are readily available and can help prevent hypothermia or frostbite if you ever get stuck in a snow storm.
